Synopsis of Shatter Me (as found on Goodreads):
Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.
The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.
The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war – and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.
Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.
Review:
FANGIRL REACTION (Yeah I'm not wasting any time on this)
*********************************************************************************
Shatter Me: THE WRITING. Excited!
*also met Tahereh Mafi after that one so DOUBLE YAY
Unravel Me:
WARNER JUST RAN AWAY WITH THIS THING. I THINK IT'S MY HEART. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN.
Ignite Me: I CAN'T HOW AM I LIVING WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TAHEREH WHY ARE GIVING US MORE REASONS TO LOVE HIM WHY DO YOU PUT THIS AGONY ON US WHY ARE YOU AMAZING HOW DO YOU WRITE THESE LINES HOW.
*********************************************************************************
Yeah. So my parents joked about calling the asylum because of the noises I was making reading Ignite Me.
I'M SANE OK
ok ok so first
This series is so beautifully written. I don't know what it is about Tahereh Mafi's writing, but something about it absolutely enraptures you; you can't let it go. She has these descriptions that are OUT OF THIS WORLD. They capture what you feel so perfect; sometimes it's a feeling you didn't even realize that could be put down in words. That can be even possibly be so beautifully describe. It's a magnificent breath of air.
Honestly, it's what really keeps me going on this series.
If you read the series for what it is... I would've given up if it wasn't for the writing.
BUT NO NO LISTEN IT'S ALL OK
Shatter Me brings an interesting premise to the story, a lot of questions, and some... interesting characters. I was upset that Juliette seem so... weak. The romance seemed. Cliche. Not seemed it WAS. It wasn't bad. A lot made up for it.
Unravel Me... it almost further enraged me to know the extend of Juliette's POSSIBLE bad-assery YET she didn't embrace it because... yeah.
BUT THEN WARNER APPEARED AND SOMEHOW TWISTED EVERYTHING AROUND AND SOMEHOW MADE ME LIKE HIM AND WHAT WAIT WHY ARE YOU CARRYING AWAY MY HEART
THEN.
Ignite Me WAS THE BOMB.
IT WAS EVERYTHING I EVER HOPED FOR.
The romance was EPIC. AMAZING. FANGIRL WORTHY. BREATHLESS.
The characters kicked in and I was. Oh. Oh.
AND JULIETTE WAS BAD. ASS. LIKE. INVINCIBLE.
It was an amazing moment of plot twist and character growth and it was like explaining to me
"no no trust me I made you mad for a reason so I can take your frustration now and throw it in the air and like explode it into this pretty firework and it's all amazing and gorgeous now wait was your heart in that firework"
...
So yeah.
I'm still in disbelief that this happened. That it ended... leaving me with no dissatisfaction? Am I just dreaming that something so perfect was written?

Synopsis (from Goodreads):
Fed up with her wild behavior, sixteen-year-old Lex's parents ship her off to upstate New York to live with her Uncle Mort for the summer, hoping that a few months of dirty farm work will whip her back into shape.
But Uncle Mort's true occupation is much dirtier than shoveling manure. He's a Grim Reaper. And he's going to teach Lex the family business.
She quickly assimilates into the peculiar world of Croak, a town populated by reapers who deliver souls from this life to the next. But Lex can't stop her desire for justice - or is it vengeance? - whenever she encounters a murder victim, craving to stop the attackers before they can strike again.
Will she ditch Croak and go rogue with her reaper skills?
Review:
I came across this gem completely by chance when I popped into this used bookstore (Book-Off) that I like to swing by whenever I’m in Honolulu. They have great prices, great books, and play great J-pop music. Now, what caught my eye was the spine-it’s holographic. Holographic. So, like that one klepto kid who just can’t resist snatching the shiny things, I was compelled to pick up Croak. And let me tell you, I was glad I did.
The plot is incredibly original. I’ve read quite a bit of YA, and I haven’t come across anything this original, captivating, or creative in a long time. The premise is interesting enough, promising a book that deals with grim reapers, a niche in YA lit that isn’t yet full to bursting, unlike some other genres I could mention*coughcoughVAMPIRES,WEREWOLVES,ANGELScough.* Sorry. Just had some CONTEMPT stuck in my throat, there. Anyways, back to the plot.
For the first 14 years of her life, Lex has been the quintessential good kid. Perfect grades, great attitude, respectful...you know, the kind of kid who would never dream of going around poking people with a stabby thing. But hey, fate’s a bitch, right? Overnight, Lex turns into an uncontrollable deviant and, long story short, is shipped off to live with her Uncle Mort (haha) over in Hicksville. BUT! Turns out it’s not a town of populated by potato farmers-it’s a ton of soul collectors.
The town of Croak will absolutely charm you, with its warm veneer of being just another hard working town hiding any discrepancies that become apparent upon closer inspection. Like how the residents are perpetually garbed in black. Like how the mayor is…unconventional, to say the least. Like how the “bank” actually harbors a portal to the Afterlife, where Albert Einstein and the presidents reside in all their sassy, immature glory. Croak does contain a (slightly predictable) murder mystery that adds suspense, but the main pull is the novel’s wacky characters.
Our protagonist, Lex, is just delightful. A snarky, intelligent character who can kick some serious ass, she’s all bark and all bite. She takes to Killing like a bookworm to John Green-with excitement, fervor, and pure joy. A truly multifaceted character, it’s interesting to witness her constant struggle to consolidate a strong love for her new reaper lifestyle with an equally strong yearning for her old life. Lex has a remarkable talent for Killing, and with that comes a compulsion to administer her own brand of vigilante justice. Her character is flawed, but her violent, darker side is alleviated by a humorous personality. In my opinion, qualities that make her all the more relatable and likable.
As for the romance, Lex’s partner, Driggs, is everybody’s favorite heterochromic Culler. There’s no insta-love, no hot-cold personality, and no love triangle fuckery. The relationship develops at a realistic pace, giving us a chance to witness their bickering and adorkable awkwardness. Too. Cute.
Overall, though a bit cheesy, Croak is undeniably a good time. A hilarious, well-executed, and surprisingly dark coming-of-age story in which our protagonist embarks on a journey of self-discovery, first love, and finding the place and people she truly belongs with. A spunky book full of laughs and quirky characters, it’s the perfect read for a day when you’re just fed up with all the unoriginality in YA lit.

Series Review: Article 5 by Kristen Simmons
Series: Article 5
Author: Kristen Simmons
Books: Article 5, Breaking Point, Three
Series' Rating: 3.5/5 stars
Book 1's rating: 4/5 stars- a dystopian rave from the early days that may have been misjudged
Book 2's rating: 3/5 stars- the story is exciting but not so much the characters
Book 3's rating: 3.75/5 stars- why can't Delirium have a clean ending like this
*I received an ARC of Three through a Goodreads giveaway. This has in no way affected my judgement of the series. Thanks to the hosts of the giveaway!
Review:
HEY GUYS I'M SORRY I FAILED TO BLOG AGAIN. So much for my new year's resolution to blog more.
I read Article 5 when the dystopian rage was INSANE. I was heads over heels for the genre at the time, I swore it could do no wrong. As I look back now, I definitely wouldn't have enjoyed Article 5 as much as I did back then if I read it now.
Picking up Breaking Point after it came out was strange. I felt like a part of me had enough of the dystopian genre- I've found tons of other more original dystopian stories that this series no longer held my attention. Also, I seemed to have forgotten a little bit of what had happened in the first book, which is NEVER a good sign with me- I rarely forget what happens in books, and if I forget it, it means the book was forgettable.
However, I got the ARC for Three and I was like: OK DO THIS. So I got my hands on Breaking Point again and pressed on, and actually it wasn't any kind of suffering. I wasn't moaning in pain, but I wasn't super excited either. I was enjoying the action, the fun kind of twists and stuff, but I was completely indifferent about the characters.
Three on the other hand, bumped up the action, which I didn't even think was possible, and I did care for some of the characters, but sadly it was not the main characters.
I'm not going to do a fangirl reaction... because there wasn't really any.
The problem with Article 5 is that it just has a sucky release time. It came out competing with all the other dystopians at the time, and Article 5 was a very classic dystopian story with really nothing new or a fun twist- but it was good at being what it was. However, it paled in comparison to other dystopian stories.
I would say that Article 5 is a classic dystopian series that could be good for first timers to dystopian genre to see how much they really enjoy the genre, and see if they should move on the more complex and unique premises. Otherwise, personally I don't think you're missing much from not reading this series.

Book: Better Off Friends
Author: Elizabeth Eulberg

They hang out after school, share tons of inside jokes, their families are super close, and Levi even starts dating one of Macallan’s friends. They are platonic and happy that way.
Eventually they realize they’re best friends — which wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t keep getting in each other’s way. Guys won’t ask Macallan out because they think she’s with Levi, and Levi spends too much time joking around with Macallan, and maybe not enough time with his date. They can’t help but wonder . . . are they more than friends or are they better off without making it even more complicated?
From romantic comedy superstar Elizabeth Eulberg comes a fresh, fun examination of a question for the ages: Can guys and girls ever really be just friends? Or are they always one fight away from not speaking again — and one kiss away from true love?

Web Series Review: Storytellers
Web Series: Storytellers
Episodes: 6
Rating: 3.75/5 stars- intriguing, but...
Synopsis (as found on the Kickstarter page):
STORYTELLERS is Skins meets Are You Afraid of the Dark? – the summer before they leave for college, a group of unlikely friends gathers around a campfire to tell scary stories, and what begins as joking fun grows steadily more frightening. As the lines between fantasy and reality begin to blur, our group of storytellers ultimately discover more than they bargained for about their world...and each other.
Part coming-of-age story and part episodic horror series with plenty of light touches of comedy, STORYTELLERS plays with familiar tropes and archetypes in fresh, unexpected ways. Following a Skins-esque format, the series will have seven episodes, with each of the first six centering around a specific member of the group, leading up to a final episode bringing all of them—and their stories—together.
Review:I don't personally watch Joey Graceffa on YouTube, but a friend had told me about this web series he was making, knowing that I like to watch web series, so I had checked this out before the web series launched.
At the time, I was pretty intrigued, the idea of a story evolving into reality, centred around six characters who each have a different supernatural/horror element coming into play. I liked the elements they had chosen, and it sounded intriguing.
So after like months, the web series finally launched (I had no idea it launched until my friend sent me the link actually...) and I clicked into the first two episodes and was quite impressed with it. It had a good set up of atmosphere, and it was scary not from say jump cuts, gore or like anything on that- it built on the suspense and fear of the characters, which built the suspense for the audience likewise. I was left wanting a little more background information, but I figure that would come with the next episodes.
As the weeks progressed, I grew increasingly frustrated with the series- there was no background information being given, instead more and more questions came up, and there were just no answers. I also wished the episodes were a little longer, just so they can add a few things to add more dimension to this series. There are a couple unbelievable points in this series in my opinion, which I won't say to not give away spoilers.
Then the finale episode launched, and first of all, my initial reaction was: "WAIT. This is the finale? I thought it was 7 episodes."
Then my frustration finally snapped as the cliffhanger came in and no questions were really answered.
We know nothing about the superpowers, and all the "supernatural" elements that each episode is based on is somewhat weak. The first two were solid, but it weakened as it went on. I don't see how the Finn episode affects Finn in any way or has a psychological fear element. Celia's wasn't really related to nightmares or fairytales. Blazer's was really minimally paranormal sci-fi.
I think my main frustration is that this series is that it was marketed wrong to me; I went in with all the wrong expectations.
As a whole, with no expectations whatever, the series is fairly strong, although the cliffhanger and lack of explanation between the two story lines is irritating, the cast is strong- everyone plays their character quite convincingly, and the shots are beautiful and realistic.
My only true irritation with this is how it's obviously marketed so a season 2 will be made, because everyone will want to find out what happens. While I understand that's the point, it slightly irritates me. There's a difference in a cliffhanger and just plain holding back information. I agree that they had a limited budget, although I'm not really sure if that's what really caused the series to cut off there.
I'll probably end up watching season 2 if it gets made... because it really does leave you wanting for more.

Book Review: Dark Star by Bethany Frenette
Book: Dark Star (Book#1 in the Dark Star series)
Author: Bethany Frenette
Rating: 3.75/5 stars- so superhero or fantasy?
Synopsis (as found on Goodreads):
Audrey Whitticomb has nothing to fear. Her mother is the superhero Morning Star, the most deadly crime-fighter in the Twin Cities, so it's hard for Audrey not to feel safe. That is, until she's lured into the sweet night air by something human and not human--something with talons and teeth, and a wide, scarlet smile.
Now Audrey knows the truth: her mom doesn't fight crime at night. She fights Harrowers--livid, merciless beings who were trapped Beneath eons ago. Yet some have managed to escape. And they want Audrey dead, just because of who she is: one of the Kin.
To survive, Audrey will need to sharpen the powers she has always had. When she gets close to someone, dark corners of the person's memories become her own, and she sometimes even glimpses the future. If Audrey could only get close to Patrick Tigue, a powerful Harrower masquerading as human, she could use her Knowing to discover the Harrowers' next move. But Leon, her mother's bossy, infuriatingly attractive sidekick, has other ideas. Lately, he won't let Audrey out of his sight.
When an unthinkable betrayal puts Minneapolis in terrible danger, Audrey discovers a wild, untamed power within herself. It may be the key to saving her herself, her family, and her city. Or it may be the force that destroys everything--and everyone--she loves.
Review:
(Finished this a while ago but I held the review back due to Blog-A-Thon.)
So you know how sometimes you run across a book you've heard of once or twice, maybe from a friend or it popped up on your Goodreads news feed, and you thought it sounded interesting but not interesting enough for you to run out and buy the book or get a hold of it at the library?

So you know how sometimes you run across a book you've heard of once or twice, maybe from a friend or it popped up on your Goodreads news feed, and you thought it sounded interesting but not interesting enough for you to run out and buy the book or get a hold of it at the library?
And sometimes when you find a book like that, and maybe you had enough money to buy one more book or you just randomly find it on the shelf of your library, you pick it up, hoping maybe it surprises you.
And sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn't. But you never go in with high expectations anyways, because you haven't heard people raving about it.
I like picking up one of these every now and then because I feel like taking a risk and maybe you'll found a fun little hidden gem. I've found ones I like, (The Shadow Society by Marie Rutkoski) and ones I hate (Devine Intervention by Martha Brockenbrough) and there are ones that sit in the back of my mind that I would like to pick up if I saw it (Midnight City by J. Barton Mitchell)
So Dark Star was one of those novels and I was somewhat.. indifferent about it?
The story has an interesting premise, although I'll warn you right now: the word superhero is insanely. INSANELY. Misleading.
This is much more of a fantasy novel in a modern setting, again with the "special race of people who have superpowers and protects normal humans" thing.
I enjoyed this novel: it had a good plot, nice twists, interesting premise, and fairly good characters, but I had two major issues with it.
1. The fantasy element
There's a fair amount of explanation of the background and history of the race (Kin) but there's no explanation to their POWERS. I didn't understand why they had random abilities or like what those abilities are and especially there is nothing explaining a guardian's power. So I'm kind of guessing my way through what they can actually do and I'm just all like "what" when they do some crazy superpower. And like the glowing wrist thing just further confused the heck out of me.
2. The romance.
Lame.
...
Ok no that's a little harsh. But it was so predictable and it was so cheesy and it just wasn't done with any kind of good DEPTH. There was no fun with it and I'm just kind of like "ohmygod this is how this is going to turn out" at the end. I was totally digging this novel without the romance. But the unsubtle hints here and there and the scene at the end is really what brought the rating down. I just can't. Either you don't do romance or you do it right. I was kind of hoping for a no romance thing happening (despite the fact the synopsis totally being obvious) because that can get tiring even though I'm a fangirl who loves her ships.
Dark Star isn't quite the hidden gem I was hoping for but there is potential in this series. I'm crossing my fingers that I won't have the two major issues in the next book (if I ever get a chance to read it) and it'll hopefully really kick ass. Please kick some major Harrower ass.

Best of 2013: Awards! (Day 3 of Blog-A-Thon)
So I get a little creative. (I tried ok.)
DISCLAIMER: Again, personal preference and opinion. Please respect that and if you disagree, comment away (nicely) and let me know what you would have for that award instead. :)
The Burning Sky
Stunningly written with a beautiful magical world, The Burning Sky ran away with my love for fantasy and smacked me in the face a couple times with it's intrigue and plot twists. It has almost everything I love in a fantasy, and although there flaws, they are easily overruled by how much I loved the magical elements of the story.
Honourable Mention: The Archived
Clockwork Princess
I think you guys know how much I love this book by now.
Honourable Mention: Champion
My Life Next Door
I struggled for a long time with this one. I was debating between myself which one I wanted for this award, and finally my heart decided on My Life Next Door. It won by it's layered and in-depth characters, and there's no doubt it's a contemporary that ran away with my heart. And the cover. Sigh.
Honourable Mention: Meant to Be
Eleanor & Park
How many more times do I need to rave about this book. You guys know how much I love it.
Honourable Mention: Fangirl (Good job Rainbow Rowell, for owning both spots.)
Bloodlines
Blowing through the Bloodlines series this year was one of my best decisions. Adrian took more of my heart away if that was even possible. Though it starts off slow, and Sydney doesn't warm up to you right away, you become mesmerized by this series and by the time you're done The Golden Lily, all you can do is lay there and pant on the ground.
Honourable Mention: Legend
The Eternity Cure
WHYYYYYYYY. MY HEART. IT'S BEEN THROWN AROUND THE ROOM LIKE A BASKETBALL.
Honourable Mention: Prodigy (This might have won if it wasn't for the fact that Champion also came out this year. BUT STILL OMG)
Meant to Be
IT'S SOOOOOOOO PRETTY. I WANT IT ON MY SHELF.
Honourable Mention: The Art of Wishing
Requiem
Book, I sentence thee to a forever time out. You shame the series. How could you ruin such a thrilling and excited dystopian series like this? I've never lost respect for an author by this much.
(Dis)Honourable Mention: Undeadly

Eleanor & Park
You know why.
Honourable Mention: Just One Day
Will Grayson, Will Grayson
It came out a long time ago I know. But I only got around to reading it this year and it was HILARIOUS. It was just complete utter fun that complemented the issues the book addresses. It's not a book giving a new perspective of the issue, but it breathes air into it, making it come alive with it's delightful humour.
Honourable Mention: Adrian Ivashkov (OK FINE HE'S NOT A BOOK I KNOW BUT I DON'T CARE.)
Hemlock
Grabbing me and thrusting me into it's chilling and mysterious world, Hemlock totally takes the cake for surprising me with it's plot and world. I could not put it down.
Honourable Mention: The Shadow Society
Devine Intervention
A close runner-up for Most Disappointing as well, it was so dull and ridiculous I almost cried to make things more interesting.
I wanted to cry for my money back.
(Dis)Honourable Mention: Timepiece
Mistwood
Let's not talk about the mess this novel is. Cause I don't even understand what the mess is.
(Dis)Honourable Mention: Mind Games
Dance of Shadows
I guessed basically every twist.
Honourable Mention: Wild Cards (The good kind of predictable. I need some balance.)
Let the Sky Fall
Another favourite, though sadly it just got cut off from my top ten, I still love the premise of this novel. The four winds and how there's a family that understands the language of each wind is beautifully crafted and is just fun to explore. The downfall of this novel is it's romance, but I have high hopes for that to improve in the next book.
Honourable Mention: The Shadow Society
The Burning Sky
Like I said, it rivals Harry Potter world status. Of course this was my favourite.
Honourable Mention: Siege and Storm (The beautiful world of the Grisha after Russia.)
Crown of Midnight
Celaena Sardothien: assassin, badass, gorgeous, flawed, reckless, etc.
EVERYTHING YOU WANT IN A PROTAGONIST. Sarah Maas spares no word to give her character as many layers as possible. One of the most fleshed out characters I ever read.
Honourable Mention: Allison Sekemoto (The Eternity Cure)
Will Grayson, Will Grayson
TINY TINY TINY TINY TINY TINY. I LOVE TINY.
Honourable Mention: Roar (Through the Ever Night)

END OF BLOG-A-THON!!! I hope you guys had fun with the craze with me. Sorry if it feels repetitive, but I definitely hope to do this again. Maybe with more than just books next year! :) School's starting, but I definitely will try to keep up and get reviews out to you guys. :D
